From Despair to Repair: Advanced Imago Tools for Guiding Couples Through Crisis to Connection

Despair to Repair is an advanced Imago training that equips therapists to confidently navigate couples through acute crisis, rupture, and relational despair into repair, regulation, and renewed connection. This workshop integrates interpersonal dynamics, relational neuroscience, and the self‑of‑the‑therapist to offer a clear, structured roadmap for working with highly dysregulated, distressed couples. Therapists learn to understand what is happening between partners, within each partner’s nervous system, and inside themselves—and to use this awareness in a deliberate, clinically effective way.

Across the training, participants deepen their grasp of how crisis impacts the nervous system, attachment patterns, and the relational space, and how to use Imago processes to restore safety and hope. The workshop highlights key concepts such as Lost Self, Unconscious Collusion, and the dynamics of disappointment, and shows how these themes play out in couples on the brink of breakup. Through teaching, demonstrations, and practice, therapists learn to use Goodbye, Amends, Forgiveness, Repair, and other Dialogues to help partners move from reactivity to responsiveness, from blame to ownership, and from collapse to a shared sense of recovery and forgiveness.

Course Description & Agenda

When addressing a couple’s crisis, therapists can employ three complementary perspectives:

  • The Interpersonal Perspective: This approach focuses on the dynamics occurring “between” partners, emphasizing the relational space and interactions.
  • The Neurobiological Perspective: Utilizing relational neuroscience, this viewpoint provides a framework for understanding and fostering inner attunement within each partner.
  • The Self-of-the-Therapist Perspective: This aspect addresses the therapist’s own countertransference and strategic use of self in the therapeutic process.

The integration of these perspectives equips therapists with a comprehensive skill set to guide couples from states of despair and rupture towards repair and renewed connection. By applying principles of both interpersonal and intrapersonal attunement, therapists gain a roadmap for navigating couples through crises. Furthermore, incorporating a structured approach to exploring countertransference reactions enhances the therapist’s ability to facilitate healing and growth for couples experiencing relational distress.

This multifaceted approach provides a robust framework for effective crisis intervention and relationship restoration in couple’s therapy.
