Picture those sessions in which the dialogue is hijacked by defensiveness, stonewalling, or angry outbursts. Picture those sessions that even after a productive dialogue you’ve been left thinking, “There’s more here – how do I help this couple dig deeper?”
In this workshop participants will learn body-based strategies that can help their couples both regulate themselves from a nervous system perspective and delve more deeply into the sources of distress held in the implicit memory that aren’t available to them cognitively. Participants will learn to read the language of the body which speaks in gestures, facial expressions, breathing changes, etc., along with skilled somatic interventions that can effectively enable the dialogue to soften reactivity, get to the heart of the source of the disconnection, and facilitate memory reconsolidation. Half of the workshop will be experiential to enable participants to walk away with new tools that they can put into practice.
After this webinar, participants will be able to:
- Name one reason that a mind-body approach is important in couple’s therapy.
- Explain how a longing to connect with one’s partner conflicts with the biological imperative of survival.
- Describe two interventions to employ when a client exhibits signs of nervous system dysregulation.
- Explain why focusing on physical sensations can illicit valuable emotional information that is inhibiting emotional connection in a couple.
This webinar will be presented online via Zoom and is intended for therapists in general at the intermediate level.
