Characterological Growth: Reclaiming Shadow, Self, and Aliveness

Characterological Growth invites you to explore your shadow, the ways it shows up in your relationships, and how integrating your missing selves can restore a fuller sense of aliveness. Come deepen your awareness of how your defenses and character structure impact those around you, and expand your inner container so you can hold more of what life brings—the joy and the sorrow, the love and the pain—without collapsing or withdrawing. This course offers a spacious, compassionate context in which to courageously examine your patterns while staying grounded in connection and hope.

As therapists, there is a unique “gift of distance” and a familiar role of being the “good parent” that can obscure the parts of self that live in the shadow. It is often easier to be empathic and accepting with clients than with partners, children, friends, or colleagues, which can feel confusing and even shaming when our unconscious, mean‑spirited reactions leak out at home. This training gently exposes how the shadow in the therapist role profoundly affects both personal relationships and professional effectiveness, and supports you in bringing these disowned parts into awareness, integration, and more conscious choice.

Course Description & Agenda

This advanced clinical training guides therapists to critically examine their own characterological adaptations and explore how unconscious defenses and shadow aspects may influence the quality and outcome of their professional relationships. Through the framework of Imago theory, participants will develop clinically relevant self-awareness by identifying and understanding the parts of themselves that reside in the shadow, recognizing how these dynamics can shape client interactions and impact therapeutic alliance.

Participants will learn in a safe, non-judgmental, and creative environment using experiential modalities—including guided imagery, somatic (body-based) awareness, written clinical reflection, and dialogical practice—each chosen to strengthen specific competencies necessary for effective clinical work.

The training focuses on practical strategies for integrating missing or disowned aspects of self, reclaiming vitality, and expanding the emotional “container” required to hold a broad spectrum of client experiences. Enhanced self-integration enables therapists to hold joy, sorrow, and complexity for clients with greater authenticity and skill.

A special section of the course addresses the clinical paradox therapists often face: the challenge of extending empathy and compassion in their professional roles while encountering greater emotional triggers and difficulty in their personal relationships. By applying shadow work principles to clinical supervision and case formulation, therapists will leave with increased authenticity, flexibility, and effectiveness—benefiting both their clinical practice and their personal lives.
